Old Dominion University (ODU) seeks nominations and applications for the position of Medical Director of Student Health Services (SHS). This is an exciting opportunity for an accomplished, dynamic, and team-oriented currently licensed Physician or Doctor of Nursing Practice with excellent clinical leadership skills. The Medical Director will work collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team to provide comprehensive primary care services and education to a culturally diverse population of more than 24,000 undergraduate, graduate, and professional students. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, a vibrant metropolitan region of coastal Virginia, ODU is a public doctoral research university with a strong focus on student success and learning. The University is currently in the planning stage of a new facility that will house Counseling Services, Health Promotions, and Student Health Services. The facility will be adjacent to the Student Recreation Center and will form a “Wellness Campus.” Construction of the facility is underway, with an anticipated opening in fall 2023. The Medical Director provides clinical leadership, supervision of professional health care providers, medical administration, budget planning, and direct patient care within the scope of their license. As a member of the SHS leadership team, the Medical Director reports to, and works as a strategic partner with, the Director of SHS to provide outstanding programs, services, and initiatives that promote the health and wellbeing of the ODU student community. The successful candidate must demonstrate a strong record of medical/clinical supervision with a deep commitment to, and understanding of, young adult contemporary healthcare issues, and proven experience and skills to work effectively with a globally diverse student population. Candidates must have outstanding clinical judgment, strong communication skills, compassion, and administrative acumen with the ability to develop a broad institutional perspective and work collaboratively with counseling and other campus partners.
Clinical responsibilities of this role include:
• Provides primary outpatient medical care within the scope of their license for patients seen at ODU SHS, including taking health histories, performing physical examinations, ordering diagnostic tests as needed, making accurate diagnoses, treating with medication, and other appropriate therapeutic modalities.
• Within the scope of their license, performs minor surgical procedures such as minor suturing, incision and drainage of abscesses, removal of skin lesions or punch biopsies, toenail procedures, etc.
• Documents health care in the electronic health record per accreditation standards.
• Refers patients as needed to specialists in the community or local emergency rooms/hospitals.
• Provides consultation to clinical providers: physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants, and provides guidance on complex cases.
• Shares after hour/weekend/holiday call responsibilities providing telephone triage for students with full-time nurse practitioners. Is available as needed in the event of an urgent medical or communicable disease on campus (e.g., meningitis or tuberculosis outbreak) needing rapid medical response or mass immunizations.
• May be assigned as essential personnel to stay on/near campus during university weather closings or for health-related emergencies.
• Provides care for student athletes for acute and chronic medical problems, and pre-participation physicals.
• Provides oversight of Tuberculosis screening and protocols.
Administrative responsibilities of this position include:
• Provides oversight of the clinical areas including a moderately complex laboratory (day to day supervision by an ASCP Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist) and clinical primary care providers (day to day supervision by the Asst. Admin/NP); this includes supervising prescriptive authority practice agreements of the full-time nurse practitioners.
• Functions as “laboratory director,” clinical consultant, and technical consultant in the Laboratory (CMS regulations); is responsible for the overall operation and administration of the laboratory; including employment of personnel who are competent to perform test procedures, record and report results promptly, accurately, and proficiently, and for assuring compliance with applicable regulations.
• Responsible for establishing monthly physician and other clinical provider schedules.
• Participates in on-going peer review with other SHS physicians and summarizes peer review results; makes recommendations related to peer review.
• Serves as backup to the Director of Student Health Services as medical consultant for health issues and inquiries from ODU administration, media, parents, etc.
• Reviews all medical policies/procedures annually in preparation for reaccreditation’s site surveys; prepares clinical area for reaccreditation including recommending changes to peer review, reviewing AAAHC Quality of Care standards and seeking clinical staff input annually, evaluating infection control procedures, and physician credentialing policies/procedures.
• Assists Director in monitoring national/international/college health issues and concerns to ensure that SHS and ODU are both aware and responsive to these issues.
• Participates as active member of the SHS Planning Committee for both short- and long-term strategic planning.
• Member of Quality Improvement Committee, focusing on quality of health care and clinical studies.
• Participates on search committees as needed for clinical staff (may delegate this responsibility).
• Serves as a representative of SHS in University-wide activities when requested.
• Performs other duties such as clinical in-services, health education programs, orientation programs for students/parents, or other projects as assigned by the Director.
• Member of Student Health Services Credentialing Committee.
• Serves as Medical Advisor for the ODU Physical Therapy Clinic.
• Serves as physician supervisor for Club Sports Graduate Assistants (licensed athletic trainers)
Minimum Qualifications
• DNP, MD, or DO from an accredited nursing program/medical school.
• Currently licensed to practice, and for physicians, successful completion of residency program and current board certification.
• Licensed to practice or eligible for licensure as a Doctor of Nursing Practice, MD, or DO in the state of Virginia.
• Current DEA license. Satisfactory Review by the National Practitioner Databank.
• Minimum of 5 to 7 years of relevant clinical experience in an outpatient setting.
• Understanding of contemporary healthcare issues for college and university students and the skills to work effectively with a college-age population.
• Strong interpersonal skills as well as excellent verbal/written skills.
• Evidence of professional leadership role in a healthcare setting or the equivalent in leadership skills.
• Experience working with a diverse student population; demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion and ability to develop and maintain inclusive environments.
• Ability to interact positively with nurse practitioners and/or physician assistants.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience as a medical director, physician, or doctor-prepared nurse practitioner in a college health setting.
• Experience with sports medicine and women’s health.
• Experience supervising a moderately complex laboratory or completion of a 20-hour CME course in Laboratory practice encompassing pre-analytic, analytic, and post-analytic testing; meet CMS requirements to fulfill the role of “laboratory director.”
• Current CPR certification.
• Experience with accreditation surveys (AAAHC preferred).
